Today, the Italian website 'Messa in Latino' has published three letters about the 15th annual Summorum Pontificum pilgrimage. They show that the Vatican Press Office gave a false explanation for the decision to deny Catholics permission to enter St. Peter’s Basilica. The organizers had asked for permission several times. In December 2025, Bishop Athanasius Schneider personally gave a request to Pope Leo XIV. He received no answer. On June 12, Rev. Claude Barthe again asked for permission to celebrate the traditional Latin Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. On August 7, Archbishop Paolo Rudelli refused the second request. On September 8, Rev. Vatican warns of ‘extremism’ in faithful who ‘raise issue of’ Communion in hand
Cardinal Roche criticised Catholics who want to receive Communion kneeling and on the tongue. On 21 October, the bishops of Panama were received at the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments during their ad limina apostolorum visit. The Dicastery published a summary of the meeting on CultoDivino.va. It reads: “The dialogue also brought to light the danger of extremism in the liturgical sphere and of the instrumentalization of the Eucharistic celebration by certain groups of the faithful. These groups tend to provoke division and confusion by raising issues such as receiving Communion kneeling and in the hand, or the use of the veil by women. Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States, praised the (failed) Vatican-China agreement in remarks to journalists: “We are happy that all the bishops of China are now in communion with the Pope, which is certainly an improvement on the situation before the agreement was made.” He dismissed the agreement’s total failure – including the fact that the papal mandate is not even read at episcopal consecrations – as mere “imperfections”. The Vatican remains committed "to persevere in dialogue" with China’s ruling elites. Archbishop Gallagher also appeared to blame the underground Church – which is suffering under the 2018 deal and already building its own episcopal hierarchy, not in communion with the Pope. The agreement “was never going to be accepted by certain people, given certain people’s view of the history of China and the government of mainland China today.”

Bishop Robert Mutsaerts was initially hopeful about Leo XIV’s pontificate but is now beginning to have doubts. Pope Leo XIV ultimately bears responsibility for the decision to deny traditional Catholic pilgrims entry into St. Peter’s Basilica, Bishop Mutsaerts told The Remnant on October 26. While unsure whether Leo personally knew about the decision, Mutsaerts insisted: “Well, in the end, he is responsible.
